A new look seems to have caught on in Manhattan over the weekend… suspenders! Suspenders worn with jeans and t-shirts, slacks and button up shirts… and I’m pretty sure I saw a baby wearing them attached to his diaper. I never thought I would say this but it seemed no one could go wrong wearing the city’s newest favorite accessory… Mork would be so proud.Naturally, I felt obligated to be part of the start up phase of this trend so I spent Sunday afternoon searching for the best suspenders in the city. About an hour into it I spotted the ultimate “suspenders look” at Club Monaco. While I was experimenting with the look I was greeted by a fresh faced young salesman who was eager to educate me on the store’s big push to sell suspenders – you can get suspender buttons sewn into any pair of pants purchased there for free. I, of course, bought a pair of pants and had the store manager send them off to their tailor. I won’t get them back until Wednesday, so in the mean time I’ll have to make due with the Marc Jacobs snap on suspenders that I purchased that day while in “must wear suspenders now” emergency mode. I’ve also sent several of my jeans to my local tailor to have suspender buttons sewn in.
My advice to you… start collecting suspenders! This fall I predict that they’ll be holding up pants and diapers everywhere.
